What makes Dr. Haddad's story more horrifying is that the US State Dept and President Roosevelt denied asylum to Jews fleeing the Holocaust from 1939-44, knowing it would result in their murder, based on a single case of a spy, and claiming threats of Nazi and Communist infiltrators. Then Roosevelt interned the entire US Japanese American population. Today the US State Dept and Pres. Biden, in addition to funding and arming the Israeli genocide of Palestinians, is likewise establishing policies that will force asylum seekers at the southern border, fleeing death threats, back into danger. No one should ever mistake the US as a champion of human rights. Of course Guantanamo is still open and awaiting its next internees.
