Welcome to another episode of our podcast Abolition, Liberation, Solidarity, A Here4TheKids Production.

Aja Barber

Today, H4TK’s Communications Director

welcomes to the podcast to look at the global impacts of our fashion choices.

Aja is an author and stylist based in the U.K. Her book is Consumed: The Need for Collective Change: Colonialism, Climate Change, and Consumerism.

By U.N. estimates, the clothing industry contributes between 8 and 10 percent of global emissions. And with the rise of fast fashion, the industry is poised to only grow bigger and more wasteful.

On top of this, most of the clothes we wear in America and the Global North are being produced by exploited labor in the Global South. And the fibers our clothes are made from no longer come from natural, renewable sources like cotton or wool, but increasingly are coming from oil in the form of polyester, acrylic, and nylon.

Aja and Jo discuss the scale of these global problems, how conditions have progressively worsened over the last two decades, and what responsible fashion choices look like.

For more on Aja’s work, please read her book or follow her on Instagram.
